Chapter 49
Talia slid the tube of mascara back into her purse pocket and stared into the mirror. She looked about as good as possible just touching everything up with what she had with her. She wasnât one of those people who carried her entire bathroom in her handbag. She was lucky to have had all her eye makeup with her that day.
Chills ran down her back as she realized how everything had worked out perfectly, even down to such a petty detail. She spun around to go outside and help Cruz, but she stopped when she noticed a cross on the wall.
She frowned, her chest tightening with guilt. All her life, her faith had gotten her through difficult times. Not this time.
She sighed, studying the intricate carving that was likely older than her great-grandparents, who were long gone and had been leaders of faith in the family on both sides. As she continued focusing on it, she felt like she was missing a message. Her life had been spared even though she was mad at God.
Sure, sheâd been doing all the right things. Praying with Dad, quoting scriptures to him, trying to help him. Even going as far as moving away to restore this building and start a new congregation. But all of that was while she was angry at God, and she hadnât admitted that to anyoneânot even herself. Until now.
âYouâve got my attention,â she whispered, looking up. âIâm ready to talk, but not while Cruz is out there cleaning my mess.â
Talia sneezed as she left the bathroom. They really needed to get the downstairs cleaned soon since a dust mask was required just walking around down there.
She paused in the reception hall, staring at the unopened boxes of Christmas decorations. Maybe Cruz would be willing to help her with thoseâshe could always threaten to do them alone after he left. She smiled, imagining his protests.
Talia grabbed a box marked manger with her momâs writing. Somehow after saying what had happened out loud, seeing her writing was a little easier. She adjusted her hold and went outside. The side of the building was cleanânot a single stray piece of the board was in sight. In fact, the string of icicle lights wasnât hanging down, either.
She looked up, noticing they were up on the eaves. She glanced around for the ladder, not seeing it, when something bright caught her attention. The icicle lights had just turned on. Cruz had to have plugged them in.
He walked around from the front. âThere you are. What do you think?â
âTheyâre beautiful.â And they really were. It really made the church shine, and this was the ugly side that still needed a lot of work. In the yard, at least. âYou didnât have to hang them, though.â
âAnd let you finish the job?â He arched a brow and then took the box from her. âWhatâs this?â
She snatched it back, giving him a playful expression. âThe manger scene. Well, this one is the actual manger. The people are in other boxes.
